A period film based on the historic 1945 Indian National Army Red Fort Trials.
A must for viewers of good cinema.
Pre – independence period has provided a big canvas to present stories of the times.Raag Desh belong to this category ( Rangoon had also a similar backdrop).
What’s Raag Desh all about? Between 1942-45 the Indians in the then British army were captured by the victor Japanese army in the South East Asian theatre. The Britishers have disowned the captured soldiers .They are not even treated as POWs.What is in the offing for these captured soldiers? Being ‘ persona non grata’ they are sucked into forming a ‘rebel army'( The INA for historians).By now the rebel nationalist Subhash Chandra Bose has taken over the command of this force and converted it into a commited machine to fight the Britishers from the outside( the Gandhians are fighting from within).
By 1945 several from the INA have been re-captured by the Britishers.Three officers are put to trial on several counts by an army tribunal in the historic red fort of Delhi? What’s the outcome of this trial is a court room drama ?
Where does Raag Desh score high? The presentation is inspiring, well written, well enacted and authentic. All perform at their best.Casting is perfect. The three soldiers on trial( Kunal Kapoor,Mohit Marwah and Amit Sadh) are calm throughout .Once a soldier ,always a soldier.
The Britishers were for rule of law.The men in trial are given freedom to put up their defence.
The communal politics of the times continues till today.( Herein the Congress wants to take the credit for defending a Hindu undertail, the Akali Dal for the Sikh and the Muslim league for the Muslim).
Being a part of the history Raag Desh may have a limited impact despite being tops. For the younger generation it could be dated.
